<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical disk device capable of reducing time required for discriminating optical disk classification, and a method for discriminating the optical disk. <P>SOLUTION: A system controller 12 of the optical disk device 1 sets an optical system of a light source and an optical pickup 4 so as to correspond to the optical disk 20 which is largest in the thickness of a protective layer for protecting a recording surface 20a, moves an objective lens into one direction while making the detection of an S-shaped waveform of an FE signal and performs general classification of the optical disk by using the S-shaped waveform obtained at this time. Based on the general classification result of the optical disk, the controller determines whether to perform the condition change or not relating to the setting of the light source and the optical system. When the condition change is not performed, the discrimination of the kind of the optical disk is performed by utilizing the S-shaped waveform used for the general classification of the optical disk. When the condition change is performed, the discrimination of the kind of the optical disk is performed by utilizing the S-shaped waveform obtained by keeping moving the objective lens further after the condition change in the same direction. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT |
