PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surgical stapling apparatus.

SOLUTION: The surgical stapling apparatus 10 comprises a handle assembly 12 including a movable handle 24; an elongated body 14 extending distally from the handle assembly 12, defining a longitudinal axis and having a distal end releasably engaged with both articulating and nonarticulating disposable loading units 16; an operating shaft at least partially supported in the handle assembly 12 and mounted to move longitudinally in response to the manual operation of an operating handle; an articulating mechanism including an articulating lever 30 and an articulating link mounted adjoining the handle assembly 12, and having a proximal end operatively connected to the articulating lever 30 and a distal end disposed adjoining the distal end of the elongated body; and a sensing mechanism disposed within the elongated body and including a sensing member operatively associated with the articulating mechanism and sensing the kind of the disposable loading unit 16 engaged with the elongated body.
