PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To set an optimum conversion coefficient for every focus detecting device. SOLUTION: The focus detecting device is applied to the camera equipped with a focus detecting device comprising: a photoelectric conversion means 1 receiving at least a pair of luminous fluxes passing through different areas of a photographic optical system and outputting a pair of signal lines in accordance with the light intensity distribution of a pair of subject images by the luminous fluxes; a positional deviation detection means 2 detecting the relative positional deviation of the pair of signal lines output from the photoelectric conversion means 1; and a conversion means 2 converting the relative positional deviation into defocus amount of the photographic optical system by using a predetermined conversion factor. It is equipped with a conversion coefficient calculation means for calculating a conversion coefficient to the reference deviation when the photographic optical system is in a focused state, and a conversion coefficient storage means 7 for storing the conversion coefficient.
