The betatron has a rotationally symmetrical inner yoke comprising two parts (2a, 2b) arranged at a distance from each other, and a torus-shaped betatron tube (5) arranged between a front side of yoke parts. A contraction and expansion coil (7a, 7b) is arranged between the front side of the inner yoke parts and the betatron tube, where a radius of the coil is equal to a reference turning radius of electrons in the betatron tube. A main field coil (6a, 6b) is arranged on the inner yoke, where the front sides of the inner yoke parts are arranged mirror-symmetrical to one another.
