The method involves selecting and engaging a gear by a gearbox control device as a function of predefined criteria. A substitute gear is automatically engaged during a failure of a gear stage, which is pre-selected by the driver or a driving-off strategy system. A delayed driving-off sequence is carried out through an electronic vehicle control device to give time to the driver to react in a targeted manner during an unexpected driving-off situation. The delayed driving-off sequence is independent of a dynamics of an accelerator-pedal actuation.
