EMERGENCY SHUTOFF VALVE FOR USE IN A FUEL DISPENSING SYSTEM

An emergency shutoff valve for use in a fuel dispensing system is provided to stop a flow of fuel by moving a valve element from an open position to a closed position in case of a failure mode in which a housing is damaged to the fuel to flow through a crack in a weak part and into an expansible chamber when predetermined load is applied to the housing. An emergency shutoff valve(20) for use in a fuel dispensing system includes a housing(30), a valve element, a latching mechanism(74), and an expansible member(100). The housing defines a fluid inlet(50), a fluid outlet(52), and a fluid flow passage(54) extended between the fluid inlet and the fluid outlet and suitable for flowing fuel inside thereof. The valve element moves between an open position and a closed position where the fuel is prevented from flowing from the fluid inlet to the fluid outlet. The latching mechanism separably latches the valve element in the open position and is coupled with the valve element. The expansible member defines at least a part of a sealed expansible chamber outside the housing. The housing has a weak part arranged downstream of the valve element. An expansible chamber is sealed at the housing in a first position upstream of the weak part and a second position downstream of the weak part. The emergency shutoff valve defines a failure mode in which structural integrity of the housing is damaged so that the fuel is supplied to the expansible chamber from the housing through the weak part when predetermined load is applied to the housing. The valve element moves from the open position to the closed position by operating the expansible chamber to separate the latching mechanism in case of the failure mode.
