The method involves inputting a registration number, which represent a vehicle (10) to be called, to a telematics unit by a driver of the vehicle via a human-machine interface. A communication connection is established by the unit to another unit of another vehicle (20). The number is checked by the latter unit via the established connection, and is output to a driver of the vehicle (20). Confirmation of the establishment of the connection to the vehicle (10) is provided by an input which is requested by the latter driver and is supplied via another interface located in the vehicle (20).
