A prismatic lithium ion battery is provided to prevent explosion or ignition by allowing a weak part to be broken easily in case of the deformation of a can due to the increase of internal pressure, thereby improving safety and reliance. A prismatic lithium ion battery comprises an electrode assembly; a prismatic can(10) which accommodates the electrode assembly; and a cap assembly which has a cap plate(140) and seals the upper aperture of the prismatic can, wherein at least one of the two maximum area surfaces of the prismatic can which face each other is provided with a deformation prevention part(150) formed at the central part, and a safety vent(160) having a weak part formed between the deformation prevention part and the outer line of the maximum area surface.
