APPARATUS AND METHOD FOR IMPROVING A FLICKER FOR IMAGES

An apparatus and a method for improving a flicker for images are provided to compensate the reduction of brightness by the low-power driving of a display device, thereby preventing the flicker on a video screen. A display device comprises a scene change detecting module(110), a brightness compensation module(120), a storage module(130), and a local contrast compensation module(140) and a saturation compensation module(150). The scene change detecting module receives frames constituting a video, compares a currently inputted frame with a previously inputted frame and detects whether a scene is changed in the currently inputted frame. The brightness compensation module determines the image category of the currently inputted frame according to whether the scene is changed in the currently inputted frame and applies a TMF(Tone Mapping Function) corresponding to the determined image category to the currently inputted frame to improve the brightness of the currently inputted frame. The storage module stores an LUT(LookUp Table) having TMF information corresponding to the image category, specific points of an image for a previous frame and TMF information applied to the previous frame. The local contrast compensation module improves local contrast for the image compensated by the brightness compensation module. The saturation compensation module improves the saturation of the compensated image.
