A liquid is separated from substances suspended in it by combined filtering and centrifugal separation, in which the main portion of the suspended substances is removed by a continuously working filter and then the filtrate which is incompletely freed from suspended substances, is treated in a centrifugal separator having continuous or intermittent discharge of the sludge concentrate, this concentrate being finally returned to the filter for refiltering.
