The method involves setting a testing mode, and varying electrical power of lamps (4, 7) e.g. discharge lamps, of an emergency lighting system. An operability of the emergency lighting system is detected if main current characteristics changes dependent on variation of the electrical power of the lamps. The testing mode is set by applying a direct current (DC) voltage to the emergency lighting system. The main current characteristics are monitored by a current measuring module (8).
