The method involves producing d-axis control current and q-axis control current, and producing a modified control current from the q-axis control current. The modified control current is limited by a connection voltage produced by a synchronous machine. The d-axis control current is converted into a control current, and the modified control current is converted into another control current, where the synchronous machine supplies the control currents. An independent claim is also included for a system for controlling a synchronous machine.
