The method involves detecting position of a sheet with a sheet velocity on a feed table (1). A sheet speeding device (2) is transported to a downstream cylinder (4). The speeding device has a sheet holding system, assigned as a functional unit in a moving manner. Actual position of front edge and a side edge of the sheet are determined during motion. The holding system is placed in a position, corresponding to the actual position of the front edge. A reference position of the front edge is determined by return of the holding system in initial position. An independent claim is also included for a device for aligning a sheet in a sheet-processing machine.
