A linear compressor and a control method thereof are provided to mount pistons for driving first and second compression parts at both sides of a moving element for controlling compression amounts of the first and second compression parts to be proportional to a stroke of the moving element, thereby controlling the linear compressor for a load easily. A linear compressor includes a motor(40) having a stator and a moving element(44), a first compression part(50) mounted at a side of the moving element for compressing fluid, and a second compression part(60) mounted at the other side of the moving element for compress for compressing fluid. A controller controls stroke of the moving element at the first and second compression parts by controlling a current amount applied to the motor. Compression amounts of the first and second compression parts are proportional to a current amount of the motor.
