Substrate treatment process uses aqueous formulation(s) (I) containing (A) binder(s) obtained by copolymerization of ethylene, (meth)acrylic acid and optionally other comonomer(s) together with (i) (C) carbodiimide(s) and (D) diol(s), triol(s) and/or polyol(s) or (ii) (B) reaction product(s) of (C) with (D).
