A safety barrier is disclosed for an underground collection system of the type including a vessel removably disposed in an underground cavity. The safety barrier comprising a safety fence movable between a retracted and an active position wherein when the vessel is disposed in the underground cavity, the safety fence is positioned in its retracted position so to not impede thoroughfare over an upper surface of the vessel, and when the vessel is removed from the underground cavity , the underground cavity is exposed, and the safety fence is positioned in its active position to prevent thoroughfare into the cavity.
