发明名称 Improvements relating to the manufacture of fibres of glass or other similar or analogous thermoplastic materials
摘要 673,469. Tempering glass &c. fibres. SOC. ANON. DES MANUFACTURES DES GLACES ET PRODUITS CHIMIQUES DE ST.-GOBAIN, CHAUNY & CIREY. May 31, 1949 [June 1, 1948], No. 14590/49. Class 56. Glass &c. fibres having a high resistance to traction are formed by causing an intense cooling action to act on molten glass &c. streamlets 1 subjected to a mechanical attenuation after they leave the outlet orifices 2 of the melting receptacle, the cooling being effected by completely surrounding the fibres with a cooling fluid below the attenuation cone in such manner that the intense cooling takes place only below the attenuation cone. The cooling device comprises a passage 4 in which cooling water circulates with a felt front 5 interposed between the cover 6 and transverse member 7 and adjustably compressed by screws. The water delivery is controlled at 9 and the waste removed at 10. The device is adjustable vertically by means of the nuts 13 on the rod supports 12, and transversely by means of the screw 15 which causes the part 16 to pivot at 14. The felt 5 is covered at the front with a film 20 of water into which the fibres pass, (see Fig. 4). The film may be formed by two felts arranged on opposite sides of the fibre, and at the start, or in the case of the breakage of a filament one of the felts may be spaced from the fibre. The diameter of the resultant fibres is increased by 5 to 10 per cent relatively to uncooled fibres, and the resistance to traction increased for 5 micron fibres by more than 50 per cent, and for 20 to 50 micron fibres by 250 to 300 per cent. The fibres may be cooled by oil in the form of an emulsion or not, by metal bodies, e.g. mercury, cooled by water circulation or refrigerant, by gaseous fluids such as CO, from carbonic snow over which the fibres pass, or by gases of high conductibility e.g. H 2 , and in all cases the whole periphery of the fibre is cooled. The cooling liquid may flow over a base of polished metal or porous bodies such as soft porcelain, felt, porous wood, and in some cases a solid surface of revolution may be used which rotates and is covered with a layer of liquid as it passes into a tray containing the liquid. Wavy fibres may be produced by superposing, simultaneously with.the cooling action, a mechanical action, e.g. causing the fibres to pass on to a suitably shaped member such as a tube or a wire on which streams a cooling liquid. Specification 673,468 is referred to.
