A media drive device, an operation method thereof, an information processing device, a recording medium accessing method thereof, and a program and a program recording medium thereof are provided to specify a format of information written to a recording medium mounted on the media drive device, and enable the information processing system mounting a UDF(Universal Disk Format) driver to access/read data stored in the recording medium by using the media drive device. A media I/O(Input/Output) controller(10) writes data to an optical disc(7) and reads the data from the optical disc. A controller(11) performs a write-only mode writing no data to the optical disc in response to a write request of an information processing device while reading the data from the optical disc in the response to a read request from the information processing device. The controller performs a read-only mode reading and writing the data to the optical disc by responding to read and write requests of the data processing device, and performs authentication between the information processing devices. The controller controls read/write operation of the media I/O controller by executing a mode transfer process transiting the read-only mode to the write-only mode by responding to the authentication.
