A method of sealing a crack in a cooling system comprises the introduction into the cooling system of a sealant whose composition comprises dry or powdered sodium silicate or a glycol based slurry of sodium silicate, and subjecting the cooling system to heat for a time sufficient to form a permanent seal over the crack upon exposure of sodium silicate to air. The sodium silicate may be used in conjunction with an inert bulking agent, such as a solid cellulosic material. The sealant composition may further contain a metal, e.g. copper or stainless steel, which is non-reactive with sodium silicate. The method has particular applicability in the treatment of cracks in the cooling systems of internal combustion engines. |
