A fuel cell system for an apartment house, and a method for operating the fuel cell system are provided to allow the system to be connected with already-existing heating equipment and to improve energy efficiency. A fuel cell system comprises a fuel converter which is installed at a common equipment to reform fuel; a main heat storage bath which is supplied with the waste heat from the fuel converter to store it as warm water; a fuel cell stack(5) which is installed at the each household and generates electricity and heat by supplied with hydrogen from the fuel converter; a household heat storage bath(6) which is installed at the one part of the fuel cell stack to be supplied with waste heat as warm water and is optionally supplied with the auxiliary water from a boiler(100); and a supply unit which is provided with a pipe to supply optionally the warm water of the main heat storage bath and the household heat storage bath as household water. |
