<p>Continuously cast slabs of thickness less than 120 mm are passed through a homogenization furnace to a rolling mill, successive slabs being welded together by a welder moving with the slabs and at least the joint regions being subsequently temperature homogenized. Preferred Features: The slabs may be produced by two or more casters, or from a multi-strand machine. The furnace may be used as a buffer space for temporary storage of slabs. Apparatus includes a furnace providing two successive zones, with the reciprocating welder, particularly an induction welder, located between them and providing thermal insulation to minimize heat loss from the slabs. The finally rolled strip is rapidly cooled.</p> |
