A portable terminal and a short message service method using the same are provided to transmit a short message and an image corresponding to the short message, thereby maximizing the communication effect. A wireless communication unit(11) processes data for a transmitting and receiving message or a transmitting and receiving image. A memory(14) stores setting information of a complex message mode in which an image is transmittable together with a message. A controller(15) transmits the message created according to the setting information and the image corresponding to the message to a counterpart terminal, during the combined message mode.
