The invention proposes a method for conveying data packets in a network, comprising the steps of examining (S 1 , S 2 ) whether a received data packet is encrypted, compressing (S 3 ) the data packet in case it is examined that the data packet is not encrypted, and refraining form compressing (S 4 ) in case it is examined that the data packet is encrypted. The invention also proposes a corresponding network element.
