In the first subfield, the width of a writing pulse in a subfield having the lowest display luminance is not larger than that in the other fields, and a voltage applied to a maintenance electrode during a writing period in a subfield where a display luminance is lowest is set to be higher than a voltage applied to a maintenance electrode during a writing period in the other subfields. In the second subfield, the width of a writing pulse in a subfield having the lowest display luminance is larger than that in the other fields, and a voltage applied to a maintenance electrode during a writing period in a subfield where a display luminance is lowest is set to be equal to a voltage applied to a maintenance electrode during a writing period in any of the other subfields.
