A portable terminal for managing a power-saving function by using a drag button and an operation method thereof are provided to offer a user-convenient interface without too easily releasing a locking function of a touch screen, in order to prevent wrong operation conducted by random contact between the touch screen and an external object. It is decided whether a touch screen is in locked state(S100). If one random spot on a touch screen area is pressed, it is decided whether a switch button is pressed for certain time(S101). If so, it is decided whether the switch button is dragged(S102). If so, and if the switch button is moved at a certain distance and another pressed switch button is released, a distance between the switch button and another switch button is calculated(S103). It is decided whether the calculated distance value is moved as a reference distance(S104). If so, a locked portable terminal is released(S105).
