A drug eluting stent system 100 designed to enable delayed drug elution once deployed such as to optimize the chances of successful endotheliazation and prevention of late in--stent thrombosis. Drug eluting stent system 100 comprises an inner stent component 30, coated by an anti-restenosis drug reservoir 40, which is therafter covered by a biodegradeable outer covering 50. Gradual spontaneous in-vivo clearance of outer covering 50 enables a delayed onset of anti-restenosis drug elution, thereby optimizing the likelihood of successful endotheliazation of stent component 30, and thereby limiting the risk of late in-stent thrombosis. In a variation, an appropriate delayed onset for drug elution may be obtained via biodegradation of a blocking substance disposed through a resilient coating 54, or by externally controllable means such as by lysis of anti-restenosis drug containing micro compartments 38 via ultrasound.
