PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium which has excellent short wavelength characteristics and is chemically stable. SOLUTION: In the magnetic recording medium using granular or elliptical magnetic powder having at least iron and nitrogen as constituent elements, including at least an Fe<SB>16</SB>N<SB>2</SB>phase and having 5 to 50 nm average particle size, a silicon containing compound (preferably a siloxane containing compound) is contained in a magnetic layer.
