The system has a graphical user menu (10) with menu units (22, 24a) that are arranged in two hierarchical menu levels. A highest menu level includes the unit (22) that is formed as a main menu. The unit (24a) formed as lower menus is provided as a node in a hierarchical low menu level of a tree structure. The unit (24a) includes reference information (26a) on the unit (22) that is formed as root and/or nodes of the structure. The unit (24a) is determined as a parent node of the unit (24a) formed as a lower menu, and a position of the menu units is determined within the structure. An independent claim is also included for a method for expanding a graphical user menu of an automobile communication system organized in a hierarchical tree structure.
