LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY ELEMENT AND ELECTRONIC PAPER USING THE SAME

Provided are a liquid crystal display element for driving a choresteric liquid crystal to display an image and an electronic paper using the same. It is possible to provide a liquid crystal display element having an improved display quality of a rear surface side opposing to the screen display surface. The liquid crystal display element includes a B display unit (6b) having choresteric liquid crystal sealed between a pair of substrates (7b, 9b) and an optical element a1 arranged on the rear surface side opposing to the image display surface of the B display unit (6b). The choresteric liquid crystal reflects a right circular polarized light of the wavelength band of the blue color and transmits the remaining light when in the planar state and transmits almost all the lights when in the focal conic state. The optical element a1 transmits at least a part of the light coming into the image display surface and emitted from the rear surface and introduces lights other than the right circular polarized light among the lights coming from the rear surface side toward the image display surface side into the rear surface.
