PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a synthesizing method for a metal telluride, and a composition containing the metal telluride. SOLUTION: A metal-ligand complex soluble in a solvent is formed by dissolving a metal precursor in the solvent containing a ligand. Thereafter, a metal telluride region having an average line dimention of 2-40 nm is formed by allowing the metal-ligand complex to react with a tellurium-containing reagent. The composition has a plurality of metal telluride crystalline regions having the average line dimention of 2-40 nm (the values of both ends are included) and expressed by the following formula (I). Each metal telluride crystalline region has the surface passivated with a saccharide portion or a multidentate carboxylate. (PbTe)<SB>1-x-y</SB>(SnTe)<SB>x</SB>(Bi<SB>2</SB>Te<SB>3</SB>)<SB>y</SB>(I), wherein x is 0 to 1 (the values of both ends are included), y is 0 to 1 (the values of both ends are included) and x+y is 1 or less.
