Disclosed is a method for producing a separator for fuel cells, which comprises a noble metal layer-forming step wherein a noble metal layer having a thickness of not less than 2 nm and containing at least one or more noble metals selected from the group consisting of Ru, Rh, Pd, Os, Ir, Pt and Au is formed by a PVD method on a surface of a substrate as a fuel cell separator which is made of Ti or a Ti alloy, and a heat treatment step wherein the substrate on which the noble metal layer is formed in the noble metal layer-forming step is subjected to a heat treatment at a predetermined temperature and a predetermined oxygen partial pressure.By this method for producing a separator for fuel cells, there can be produced a fuel cell separator which is made of Ti or a Ti alloy and has excellent corrosion resistance, high adhesion of the noble metal layer and low contact resistance with excellent productivity.
