The present invention relates to the field of production of recombinant human interferon alpha. More specifically, the invention discloses novel recombinant Pichia pastoris strains that have been genetically engineered for efficiently producing two kinds of active recombinant human interferon alpha: human interferon alpha 2a and human interferon alpha 2b. The invention also pertains to optimized processes for producing and purifying said interferon alpha.
