PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a head slider determining the projection amount of a head element while preventing the head element from being damaged, and to provide a storage medium driving device. SOLUTION: A slider main body 31 defines first and second areas 55 and 56b. An insulating nonmagnetic film 32 is stacked on an air exit side end surface of the slider body 31. A head element 33 is buried in the first section 57 of the nonmagnetic film 32 of the first area 55. A first actuator 74 generates projection of the first section 57 of the first area 55. In this head slider 21, zero calibration is carried out based on a second section 58. The projection of the first section 57, i.e., the head element 33, is prevented. Damage of the head element 33 is prevented. Moreover, when the projection amount of the second section 58 is replaced by that of the first section, the projection amount of the first section 57, i.e., the projection amount of the head element 33, is decided.
