PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of preventing erroneous detection of the full state of a container even when it is not equipped with a cleaning mechanism, and avoiding failure that printing is interrupted without notice after detecting the nearly full state thereof. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus is equipped with the container where a transparent or translucent light transmission part is formed near an aperture part and in which waste toner not transferred to a recording medium is dropped and collected, and a waste toner collection amount detection means which detects the full state of the container based on the transmitted light quantity by radiating detecting light to the light transmission part. The light transmission part 6 is formed as an inclined surface set at an angle of reposeθof toner or equal to or above it, and the waste toner collection amount detection means 10 is equipped with a first collection amount detection means 11 detecting predetermined toner collection amount based on the transmitted light quantity and a second collection amount detection means 12 detecting the full state of the container.
