PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To execute early restart in a mercury lamp having a start assisting conductor arranged on an outer surface of a bulb. SOLUTION: A starting power source 4 applies a pulse voltage when the potential of an electrode 12b is lower than that of an electrode 12a while the potential of the electrode 12a and that of the electrode 12b are being periodically changed depending on an A.C. voltage of a ballast 3, that is to say, by finding timing until the next half cycle comes after a half cycle in which this mercury lamp unit exhibits the above state in the A.C. voltage comes. The starting power source 4 generates a pulse voltage to set the direction of a first pulse in the pulse voltage reverse to the direction of the A.C. voltage in applying the pulse voltage.
