PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a separator that has the same excellent impregnating property in electrolyte and ion mobility as those of a conventional separator containing cellulose and also has mechanical strength and an oxidation/reduction-resistant property. SOLUTION: In the separator for electric double layer capacitors comprising a porous sheet, the porous sheet has a high-density layer having a gap ratio of approximately 20-50% and a low-density layer having a gap ratio of approximately 50-80%.
