PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sheet stacking device capable of stacking sheets without using inserting paper and without damaging the surfaces of sheets, and a stacking method. SOLUTION: This sheet stacking device comprises a stacking surface on which the input sheets are stacked, an upstream sheet receiving member which receives the upstream side of the sheets in the upper part of the stacking surface, and a downstream sheet receiving member which receives the downstream side of the sheets in the upper part of the sheets. When receiving the sheets, one of the upstream sheet receiving member and the downstream sheet receiving member moves in the input direction while the other in the lower part, and thereby, they escape from a sheet holding position and drop the sheets onto the stacking surface.
