PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light modulation device designed such that the effect of heat on an optical system that attains a high dynamic range is reduced and the high dynamic range characteristic of the optical system is maintained, and to provide a projector. SOLUTION: The light modulation device 100 includes: a light valve 51, serving as a first light modulating element, which modulates light from a lamp 31 for use as a light source; a light valve 81, serving as a second light modulating element, which modulates light from a light valve 51; a relay lens section 70 disposed between the light valves 51 and 81; and a fixing member 200 that fixes the light valves 51 and 81 and relay lens section 70 integrally in a prescribed place.
