PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an in-plane switching liquid crystal display element of excellent display quality which has a wide field of view and causes no display irregularities. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal element has a liquid crystal layer enclosed between a pair of substrates of which opposite internal surface is subjected to alignment in parallel and in opposite directions, and is provided with: a plurality of pixel electrodes 4 on an internal surface of one substrate 2 such that a plurality of electrode portions 41 in a thin and long shape are formed in parallel in a unit region forming one pixel, two thin and long side portions 42a and 42b are bent in a dogleg shape, and a bent part where the two thin and long side portions 42a and 42b cross each other is formed in a shape wherein one side connected to one thin and long side portion 42a is bent to the thin and long side portion 41 in such a direction that tilt angles to alignment processing directions 1a and 2a are large and a side connected to the other thin and long side portion 42b is bent to the other thin and long side portion 42b in such a direction that tilt angles to the alignment processing directions 1a and 2a are large; and a counter electrode 5 which is disposed while insulated from the pixel electrodes 4 and produces a lateral electric field with the plurality of thin and long electrode portions 41.
