Disclosed are novel bioanodes, biocathodes and biofuel cells having increased electrode area partially arising from the increased surface area of the bioanode or biocathode. The surface are of the bioanode or biocathode is increased due to the non-planar macroscopic shape relative to an otherwise identical macroscopically planar biocathode.
