<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform reflection display and transmission display without contrast inversion by controlling alignment directions of liquid crystal molecules in a plane parallel to a substrate surface. <P>SOLUTION: A plurality of signal electrodes 4 and a common electrode 5 for producing lateral electric fields in two directions deviating from a predetermined position by a predetermined angle on one side and the other side to control directions of molecule long axes of liquid crystal molecules with those lateral electric fields are provided on an internal surface of one substrate. A reflective film for forming a reflection display portion which reflects light incident from an observation side to project it to the observation side and a transmission display portion which projects light incident from the opposite side to the observation side corresponding to one of producing regions for the lateral electric fields in the two directions in each of a plurality of pixels is provided on an internal surface of a substrate 2 on the opposite side from the observation side. Further, alignment films which are alignment-processed to align liquid crystal molecules of the reflection display portion in a predetermined alignment direction and liquid crystal molecules of the transmission display portion in a predetermined alignment direction is provided on internal surfaces of the pair of substrates, and polarizing plates are arranged on external surfaces of the pair of substrates, respectively. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT |
