PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus in which a reading device is constituted of a plurality of light receiving units, the image reading apparatus that can correctly decide the respective connection states between respective light-receiving units and a controller. SOLUTION: An image sensor 31 is configured, by arranging the plurality of light receiving units 71 to 76 in respective regions obtained by dividing the entire reading area into a plurality of regions, and output signal lines from the respective light-receiving units 71 to 76 are bundled into one by a flat cable 78 and are connected to an ASIC (application specific integrated circuit) via a connector 79. A CPU connected to the ASIC decides whether the outputs from the respective light-receiving units 71 to 76 are input normally to the ASIC 64, and the CPU in which a start point and an end point are set so as to straddle between adjacent light-receiving units in the image sensor 31, acquires a white level and a black level from the pixels within a reading range set so as to be a single location in the respective light-receiving units, and determines abnormality from the difference between the levels.
