Provided is a technology of managing a recording area so that data is not written on a defective area where an error is generated during data writing. An optical disc device is provided with a defect judging section, which judges as a defective area a recording area where an error is generated during data writing, and measures the size of the defective area. The optical disc device is also provided with a defect management section, which receives a data write instruction, ensures on the optical disc a substitute area having a size determined based on the size of the measured defective area, and specifies a recording area so that data is not written on the defective area. The optical disc device writes the data on the ensured substitute area.
