The device has a locking and releasing device over which a seat part (12) and a backrest (14) are arranged pivotably on a pivot axle (A), are adjusted relative to each other by actuating release of the part and/or the backrest, and fixed by actuating locking of the backrest. The pivot axle or a ring (R) surrounding the axle are provided as an actuator. The actuator consists of shape memory alloy, so that the actuator experiences a geometrical shape change by a temperature-induced influence to cause a locking or releasing of the part and/or the backrest.
