Disclosed is a furylmethylene malonamide compound which is highly water-soluble, shows an excellent absorption in the ultraviolet ray wavelength region but no absorption in the visible region, and has excellent stability. Specifically disclosed is a furylmethylene malonamide compound represented by the general formula (1) or a salt thereof. (1) wherein R<SUB>1</SUB>, R<SUB>2</SUB> and R<SUB>3</SUB> independently represent a hydrogen atom or a linear or branched alkyl group having 1 to 4 carbon atoms; R<SUB>4</SUB> and R<SUB>5</SUB> independently represent a group [(CH<SUB>2</SUB>)<SUB>m</SUB>-O]<SUB>n</SUB>-R<SUB>6</SUB> where R<SUB>6</SUB> represents a hydrogen atom or a linear or branched alkyl group having 1 to 4 carbon atoms; m represents an integer of 2 to 4; and n represents an integer of 1 to 5, provided that R<SUB>4</SUB> and R<SUB>5</SUB> may be the same as or different from each other.
