An abbreviated dial device of a portable terminal and a method are provided to enable terminals allowed by a server which manages abbreviated dial information to modify or add the abbreviated dial information, and to transmit the changed abbreviated dial information to the portable terminals, thus users unfamiliar to operating the terminals can easily use abbreviated dial functions. A portable terminal(100), which consists of an input unit(108), a display unit(110), a memory(106), a controller(102) and a list generating unit(104), transmits abbreviated dial information of a receiving portable terminal to be called to an abbreviated dial server(120) which stores abbreviated dial information. If the abbreviated dial information is received from the portable terminal, the abbreviated dial server obtains a user of the receiving portable terminal corresponding to an abbreviated dial, and carries out call connection to the portable terminal of the obtained receiving user. The abbreviated dial sever includes a communication unit(122), a controller(124) and an abbreviated dial database(126).
