PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sewing machine in which escape of the needle thread end part to the underside of cloth at the sewing start is securely prevented by a simple constitution using a presser foot vertical movement device so as to form a seam from the first stitch without setting the needle thread holding mechanism separately. SOLUTION: A presser foot vertical movement position changing mechanism 13 is equipped on a presser foot vertical driving device 10. A presser foot control means which controls an actuator of the foot presser foot vertical movement changing mechanism 13 to change the vertical movement range of a presser foot 6 vertically moving synchronized with the sewing motion to the lower direction while a predetermined number of stitches are sewed from starting sewing and thereafter the presser foot is switched to a normal sewing position is provided. Immediately after starting sewing, the end part of the needle thread 15 extended from the eye of the sewing needle 9 can be pressed against the cloth W on the needle plate 2a because the presser foot 6 is pressed against the upper surface of the needle plate.
