<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discriminating device designed so that time required for a discriminating process may be shortened while conditions for discriminating the type of a recording material are maintained. <P>SOLUTION: The discriminating device includes: a light emitting section that irradiates recording paper with light; a sensor section that has a plurality of imaging elements, receives light reflected by the recording material by means of the imaging elements, thereby picking up images on the surface of the recording material; a converting means for converting the picked up image into image data having a plurality of pixels arranged in prescribed directions; and a calculating means for integrating differences between the density values of the first and the second pixels of the plurality of pixels.
