PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the size of a table for use in half tone processing. SOLUTION: Image processing ASIC 155 of a printer 100 performs half tone processing with respect to each picture element constituting image data by referring to in order an encode table ET, a predecode table DT1, a post decode table DT2 and a sequence value table ST stored in a RAM 152 to determine dot arrangement formed on a printing medium. Herein, although in the encode table ET an encode value and a gradation value are stored in pairs or in units of block numbers, data capacity thereof is previously reduced up to a capacity less than data capacity in response to a product of an encode value less than the maximum value which 5 bit encode value can take and the number of blocks.
