PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a laser diode controller and a driving method of an ATC circuit for restricting a boosting rate of drive current of a thermoelectric conversion element at the time of the start of usage of a laser diode. SOLUTION: In a controller 6, operation of a drive circuit 4d is stopped and the temperature of the laser diode 4a is specified at the time of the stop of the drive circuit 4d. Based on the specified temperature, a reference temperature is set at the drive circuit 4d. After the setting, the drive circuit 4d is operated.
